Gobind: Let's Be Like Estonia
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia should emulate the northern European country of Estonia where 99 percent of its government services are available digitally, says Gobind Singh Deo.
The Communications and Multimedia Minister said that this means a fully digital end-to-end experience with no phone calls, office visits, or physical paperwork needed.
Estonia was ranked “the most advanced digital society in the world” by tech magazine WIRED.
“I am made to understand that 99% of government services in Estonia are available digitally.
“There are only three services, I am told, that you cannot do online in Estonia: get married, get divorced and buy real estate.
“This is the digital government that I envision for Malaysia,” he said at the “Malaysia: A New Dawn” conference here Tuesday.
However, Gobind added that to make this a reality, the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu) needed to be under his ministry.
Mampu is currently under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
Gobind also said that that by 2023, all strategic industrial areas and state capitals in the nation will have gigabit-speed Internet services.
“By 2022, 70% of all schools, government offices, hospitals, clinics, police and fire stations will be served by fibre networks,” he pledged.
